Discover the Elegance of Washington Wines.
In recent years, Washington State has become a premium wine-producing region. Its wine is internationally known and compared to those produced in the French regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy.
The Washington wine industry began small with its first planting in 1825, but has grown from 100 wineries producing 9.6 million gallons of wine on 17,000 acres in 1997 to more than 360 wineries producing 18 million gallons of wine on 30,000 acres in 2005. With more than 500 wineries supplied by 350 growers in 2007, the number of wineries has increased 400% in the last decade, making Washington the nation's second largest wine producer.
Washington's wine industry contributes $3 billion to the state economy with Cabernet and Merlot as its leading varietals.
